- Pilates is a method of mind-body conditioning exercise programme that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to improve overall central core stability and posture. A stable centre is essential to prevent lower back pain and good posture.

- Precise movements, awareness of breath control and a continuous flowing movement. The aim is to alter abnormal movement patterns to carry over into daily function ie. the way one bends from the spine can be causing back pain. So to correct the way one moves can have profound affects on reducing pain.

- Each exercise has differing levels, so there is a lot of scope for progress.

- Why the need to modify Pilates?

·To make the use of Pilates safe for all levels
·To reflect current research; 80% of the population have had lower back pain, therefore they are likely to have weakened or poorly functioning deep abdominal and back muscles.
·Some of the mat exercises can be inappropriate for some people, but particularly people with back pain. In modified Pilates 11 of the 34 are contra indicated for therapeutic use, therefore safer when modified.
